Instructions

1- Before you can start your dreadlocks, it's best to dry your hair out. For at least a week, do not use any conditioner in your hair. If you can stand it, wash your hair with bar soapinstead of shampoo. This will dry it out.

2- Separate your hair into sections and braid it. Each braid will become one dreadlock, so plan accordingly. Leave the braids in at least one day. This will give your hair some wave which makes it easier to dread.

3- Take out one braid. Use your come and back-comb the hair to make it knotty. Then spread some dread wax on your hands and roll the new dreadlock between them. Repeat the backcombing and rolling process several times until it is starting to look like a dreadlock.

4- Do this for each of the braids until you have a head full of dreads.

5- Over the next couple of weeks, you are still in a precarious situation. Getting your hair wet in the shower may loosen your budding dreadlocks. To help them form, try soaking your hair in salt water. This will further dry out your hair. Apply more wax as needed.

The devastating magnitude 7.0 quake that ripped through Haiti Tuesday January 12, 2010, reportedly killing thousands, did not catch everyone by surprise.
In an interview last week for an unrelated story, Robert Yeats, a professor emeritus in geoscience at Oregon State University in Corvallis and co-author of a June 1989 article for Scientific American "Hidden Earthquakes," said that an imminent big west coast earthquake concerned him far less than a "big one" that might occur in Haiti, due to the large fault near the capital city of Port-au-Prince—and the poverty-driven low level of earthquake-preparedness there. "If they have an earthquake on this fault that runs through Port-au-Prince," the death toll would be tremendous, he said January 6.

• Non-volcanic islands are thin and lie south of the land masses they dripped from.
• There's a waist around the equator
• Pool of land at the antarctic but none at the arctic

Kooloo-Kamba

We've had reason now and again to mention the unusual ape photographed at Yaounde Zoo (in Cameroon) a few times. I finally got round to digging out and scanning the only photo of the animal I've seen: it was taken by Peter Jenkins and Liza Gadsby and first appeared in the November 1996 issue of the Newsletter of the Internal Primate Protection League (IPPL). It was later published in issue 100 of Fortean Times.


ench Congo, and to live alongside chimps of the nominate subspecies (Hill 1967, 1969) [type specimen of While Hill regarded the kooloo-kamba as a distinctive chimp subspecies, previous authors regarded it as a distinct species somehow 'intermediate' between chimps and gorillas, or as the product of gorilla-chimp hybridisation. Supposedly, several individuals were kept in captivity during the late 1800s and ealy 1900s, including 'Mafuca' of the Dresden Zoological Garden, and 'Johanna' of Barnum and Bailey's circus collection. There's a substantial literature on these animals. Some mammalogists said that they were gorillas, others than they were chimps, and others said that they were hybrids, or intermediates (see Shea (1984) and references therein). It has most recently been argued that 'Mafuca' was a Bonobo P. paniscus (see de Waal 1997), in which case at least some 'kooloo-kambas' were definitely not gorilla-chimp hybrids or intermediates at all.
It does now seem that the kooloo-kambas of the older literature reflect the fact that both gorillas and (especially) chimps are more variable in facial anatomy, body size and overall appearance than many primatologists were once willing to accept. Chimps of some populations, for example, are larger, darker-skinned, and superficially more 'gorilla-like' than many of the chimps first brought back to Europe, but this doesn't mean that such animals are hybrids, or intermediates. Indeed, Shea (1984) concluded that the 'kooloo-kambas' present in osteological collections are either large male chimps, or small female gorillas. Various other controversial African apes - most notably the Pygmy gorillaPseudogorilla mayéma (see Groves 1985) [shown here, photo ©, by B. Heuvelmans] - also tell us more about our poor understanding of variation, and don't necessarily point to the presence of additional distinct taxa.
Having said all that, the possibility that some 'kooloo-kambas' or kooloo-kamba-like apes really were or are hybrids, or new taxa, does still exist. Could individuals like the Yaounde Zoo animal shown above really be hybrids? I don't know: opinions gratefully received. Pterosaurs


Pterosaurs are extinct flying reptiles. They lived worldwide in all kinds of environments and ranged from around 50 cm to 13 m in wingspan. They existed from about 225 to 65 million years ago and thus ran alongside the dinosaurs pretty much toe to toe for their entire existence, dying out in the great extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period. Although they first appeared in the Triassic period, their origins might extend beyond that by some margin, but fossils of this time are rare, so it is hard to say.

Scientists Study East Coast Igneous Rocks for CO2 Storage


Here's some interesting research on the storage part of the carbon capture and storageequation: Researchers from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatoryreport that several sites of igneous rock off the east coast of the United States have superior potential to store CO2 from power plants. Compared to onshore locations, undersea storage in these locations has "significant advantages" the study says:

The undersea formations in question are made of basalt, the same type of rock which forms the Palisades in New Jersey as well as sites in other locations.

Areas Around NYC, South Carolina, Georgia Considered
The Columbia Univ. scientists have identified four areas greater than 1000 square kilometers off the coasts of northern New Jersey, Long Island, and Massachusetts. Other locations are further south, with the largest being off of South Carolina and Georgia.

Previous studies have proposed to store CO2 in sedimentary formations on land, where concerns about leakage (among other things) make the proposal controversial.

Drilling Needed to Confirm Site Suitability
Currently all locations have been determined by seismic and gravity measurements. Study lead author David Goldberg says,
"We would need to drill them to see where we're at. But we could potential do deep burial [at the NYC metro area locations]. The east coast makes sense. That's where the people are. That's where power plants are needed. And by going offshore, you can reduce risks."

The scientists say that injecting liquified CO2 into the undersea formations undergo natural chemical reactions that will eventually transform it into solid minerals similar to limestone, thereby alleviating concerns about the greenhouse gas leaking back to the surface.

To ensure that the liquid CO2 doesn't change back into gas it has to be placed at least 2,500 feet below the surface for natural pressure to keep it in a liquid state. While basalt formations on land are comparatively shallow, those underwater go far deeper, covered by water, and hundreds to thousands of feet of sediment.

The results of this research have been published in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
