sarcastic fringehead fish



The sarcastic fringeheadNeoclinus blanchardi, is a small but ferocious fish which has a large mouth and aggressive territorial behavior, for which it has been given its common name. When two fringeheads have a territorial battle, they wrestle by pressing their distended mouths against each other, as if they were kissing. This allows them to determine which is the larger fish, which establishes dominance.
They can be up to 30 centimetres (12 in) long, elongate and slender, and are mostly scaleless with great pectoral fins and reduced pelvic fins. They tend to hide inside shells or crevices. After the female spawns under a rock or in clam burrows the male guards the eggs.
They are found in the Pacific, off the coast of North America, from San FranciscoCalifornia, to central Baja California. Their depth range is from 3 to 73 metres (9.8 to 239.5 ft).

Unexpected Life Found In The Ocean's Deepest Trench


The Mariana Trench cuts a 1,500-mile incision in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean near the island of Guam. That's where an international team of scientists has just spent over a month sending probes down to the deepest place on Earth.
The scientists were stunned by the amount of life they found there, including a fish species inhabiting the deepest depths.
The bottom of the trench lies 7 miles below the ocean's surface. It's a place of perpetual darkness and freezing cold. To explore it, scientists aboard the research vessel Falkor dropped "landers" over the side. Each one is about the size of a large refrigerator and bristles with instruments and cameras.
The landers use thick glass spheres full of air to provide buoyancy that controls their up and down movement. The spheres have to withstand pressures that would crush a human like a tin can.
"If they crack, they implode in a microsecond," says biologist Jeff Drazen of the University of Hawaii, who is a senior scientist on the team. "And that sets off a shock wave like a stick of dynamite going off."
And that's just what happened to one lander. The sphere's implosion was recorded by its microphone, and in those cold depths, the sound kept echoing along the trench. But the lander itself survived, as did all but one of the others.
Once on the bottom, they waited and watched. And they got some big surprises. "We saw the deepest living fish ever recorded," says Drazen. "Definitely something new. We took one look at the thing and were amazed — big wide wing-like fins, this eel-like tail and this scalloped face. It was very unique." They nicknamed it the "ghost fish" for its almost translucent skin. It appears to be a new species of snailfish — living 5 miles below the surface.
The landers also carried baited traps that drew fish to be videotaped. What the fish didn't eat was consumed by hordes of shrimp-like amphipods. Other traps actually caught animals, including another new species of snailfish. Several were brought back up to the ship, though they didn't survive the decompression.
The reason the fish can withstand pressure that's thousands of times that at the surface is because of a special chemical in their bodies. Called trimethylamine oxide, it keeps the cell walls of the fish and amphipods flexible instead of being crushed or infiltrated with salt water.
The scientists also wanted to know what lives in the sediment at the bottom. The sediment is made of decomposed ocean life that constantly drifts down from above like snow. The landers dug into the sediment and measured the respiration rate of microbes in it. Drazen says the results were astonishing. "The rates were really high; it was incredible. It was really cooking."
All in all, the trench turned out to be a biological hot spot. Paul Yancey is a team biologist from Whitman College. "It's looking like there's a lot more life down there than we thought," he says. "You know, this is so far from sunlight that people thought there wouldn't be a lot of life down there, but there is."
Yancey says one reason appears to be the fact that the trench is truly the bottom of the planet. Things end up there the way they do at the bottom of a purse. "It's looking like these trenches might act like funnels to collect stuff from all over the oceans that is sinking down."
The stuff that rains down to the sea floor sustains life on the bottom — if those creatures can adapt to the hostile conditions. Yancey says that's what biologists live for — the chance to find crazy new kinds of life. "I think the big picture is that there's so much about the planet we don't know yet," he says. "I mean, literally, we have better maps of the Moon and even Mars than we do of most of the deep sea."
Scientists will be back at the trench. The Schmidt Ocean Institute, which owns and operates the team's research vessel, is building a remotely operated vehicle that will be able to travel along the bottom. Then the scientists won't have to wait for deep-sea dwellers to come to them. npr

Sex 'emerged in ancient Scottish lake'

Scientists believe they have discovered the origin of copulation.
An international team of researchers says a fish called Microbrachius dicki is the first-known animal to stop reproducing by spawning and instead mate by having sex.
The primitive bony fish, which was about 8cm long, lived in ancient lakes about 385 million years ago in what is now Scotland.
...Prof Long added that the discovery was made as he was looking through a box of ancient fish fossils.
He noticed that one of the M. dicki specimens had an odd L-shaped appendage. Further investigation revealed that this was the male fish's genitals.
"The male has large bony claspers. These are the grooves that they use to transfer sperm into the female," explained Prof Long. bbc

The medusafish, Icichthys lockingtoni, is found in oceanic waters form the surface to many hundred meters deep. They are often associated with jellyfish. This one is living with an eggyolk jellyfishPhacellophora camtschatica, which provides it with protection from predators and opportunities to scavenge the remains of the jellyfishes’ meals.

pallid sturgeon babies


We have babies at the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery in South Dakota!


The fish are spawned at the hatchery and later released to increase or maintain fish populations in the wild. The pallid sturgeon is one of the rarest and largest freshwater fish in North America. It is an endangered ancient fish that can live up to 50 years, grow up to 6 feet long and weigh up to 85 pounds (endangered fish).

The hatchery is strategically located on the Missouri River near Lewis and Clark Lake and Lake Yankton. The pallid sturgeon is present in both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. At this time, there are only an estimated 6,000-10,000 fish in both river systems as populations have undergone a severe decline. Current stocking efforts at Gavins Point and other fish hatcheries, along with habitat restoration efforts, are helping to increase these numbers in the future.

The hatchery is open to the public and provides nature hikes and hatchery tours and houses an aquarium for visitors to observe fish.

Climate Change Leads to Fish Hybiridization

A never before seen twist of events in nature reveals an unexpected effect of climate change is hybridization between a native and non-native species. A USGS study published in Nature Climate Change examined how recent climate warming has influenced the spread of hybridization between threatened native westslope cutthroat trout and non-native rainbow trout in the Flathead River system in Montana and British Columbia, Canada. 
The study noted, over the past 30 years, hybridization rapidly spread upstream, irreversibly changing the genetic integrity of native westslope cutthroat trout populations. The rapid increase in hybridization was highly associated with climatic changes in the region. From 1978 to 2008 the rate of warming nearly tripled in the Flathead basin, resulting in earlier spring runoff, lower spring flooding and flows, and warming summer stream temperatures.

Justin Gibbens’s Twisted Wildlife Paintings

Based in Thorp, Washington, Justin Gibbens describes himself as a nature boy. The various creatures that abound in the Evergreen State as well as his imagination find their way into Gibbens’s paintings, which often combine media such as watercolor, gouache and tea. Gibbens has formal training in both Chinese painting techniques and scientific illustration — two influences that do not seem so disparate when combined in his sparse yet impactful artworks.
“It’s probably no surprise that much of my inspiration comes from all things that scamper and poke about in the thickets and undergrowth, inhabit the tide pools and ocean depths and fly through the ether,” said the artist in an email to Hi-Fructose. “Field guides, natural history museums and David Attenborough documentaries are also good.”…

Absurd Creature of the Week: The Pearlfish

This Fish Swims Up a Sea Cucumber’s Butt and Eats Its Gonads

(You’re a Sea Cucumber…) You’re breathing through your anus, by the way, and when you take a breath, the pearlfish strikes — squirming up your butt, making itself comfortable in your respiratory organ, and eating your gonads. Or, they’ll go up in pairs and have sex in your body cavity. And that’s when you realize that you must have been a really awful human being in a past life. Like, the type of person who talks on their phone in a movie theater kind of awful.
Such pearlfishes come in a range of species, and don’t necessarily limit themselves to invading sea cucumbers. They’ll also work their way into sea stars, and are so named because they’ve been found dead inside oysters, completely coated in mother-of-pearl. Beautiful, really, though I reckon the pearlfish would beg to differ.
This behavior is the strange product of a housing crisis. You see, shelter is in short supply on many seafloors, particularly those that lack reefs. And there are few better shelters than sea cucumbers, little mobile homes that pearlfishes will enter pretty much as they please, leaving to hunt and returning for protection. If they can’t return to the same one, no worries at all. There’s plenty of decent housing squirming around the seafloor — if you’re willing to live in a sea cucumber’s bum…

Brochoadmones


Brochoadmones came from the Early Devonian of Canada, about 435-430 million years ago. Around 10cm long (4in), it was a type of “spiny shark" — an extinct group that shared features with both bony and cartilaginous fish.
And it had a lot of extra fins. Six paired “finlets” running from below the gills to the pelvic fins, each consisting of a spine with a web of scaled skin. They look very much like what would be expected for multiple fins evolving from a lateral fin-fold (essentially a single elongated fin subdividing).

Tripod Fish (Bathypterois sp.)



Bathypterois is a genus deep sea fish known as the tripod fish. As their name suggests, the fish stands on the sea floor using three fins as support. In some species, these fins can be up to 1m long.
The fish perch on the substrate with their heads facing the current. The fins allow for their heads to be at the right level to catch drifting crustaceans and small fish.
Due to the complete darkness of the deep sea, the fish does not rely on eyesight to catch prey. Instead, it faces its pectoral fins forward and uses tactile and mechanosensory cues to identify food. Once they feel prey and realise it is edible, the fins sweep the food into the fish’s mouth.

Savage’s Birdsnouted Whalefish


…a species of flabby whalefish (Cetomimidae) that is occurs in the the depths of Pacific ocean, chiefly in the Coral Sea and the Gulf of California. However, it is also known from the Eastern Central Atlantic. Like other flabby whalefish R. savagei’s eyes are vestigial and instead of sight R. savagei uses its lateral line to sense changes in its surroundings.
